Keep Math Skills Sharp This Summer!
Just like summer reading helps kids stay strong with their literacy skills, regular math practice keeps problem-solving and number sense growing, too! These problems review the skills you learned this year and will help prepare you for the upcoming school year.
Aim for 15–20 minutes of math a few times a week. Try to complete a few problems daily. They can be done in any order. It should be informal and fun. Let’s keep the math momentum going!
Summer Reading
Summer reading is a valuable tool for middle school students, promoting academic skills and personal growth. We believe it is important in order to prevent learning loss, enhance vocabulary and comprehension, develop emotional intelligence, encourage independent learning, and foster a love for reading. With opportunities to read throughout the summer without a graded assignment attached to the experience, students will be able to keep their mental muscles working while still having something to bring to their language arts classes within the first few weeks of the school year.
In Language Arts it is important for students to find books that are the right match for them. Since teachers cannot personally provide guidance over the summer, we have included titles on our book list that have been nominated for the 2025-2026 Mount Laurel Book Award (previously known as the Pennsylvania Young Readers Choice Award from PYRCA).
This award is sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Librarian Association with the goal of providing students with high quality books and engaging reading experiences. We are encouraging our students to read at least one book from the list of award nominees this summer. Students are required to read one book from the list throughout the upcoming school year. Students who read three more of the nominated books will be invited to vote for the award winners in early spring.

Readers are encouraged to complete the graphic organizer for their designated grade level to track what they have read throughout the summer months. This will help them navigate their first Language Arts assignment at the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
